I started a site in Jan 06 and currently have over 6000 unique visitors a day with around 30000 pageviews. In April my CPC doubled for some reason and I hit $2000 for the first time.

What did I do
- create/group content that is unique to create a user community
- make it as easy as possible for users to add content (leave comments etc.)
- submit stories to Digg
- submit my site to top 100 lists
- basic SEO on every page
- experiment extensively with add placements
- only focus on one site
- focus on my visitors not on Adsense

What did I not do?
- directory submissions
- extensive SEO
- read hours on a forum how to get rich fast ;-)
- try to create 100 sites

I'm sure some of you will say my approach is not the best, and I'm not claiming it is. Just wanted to share that you can get results with just focussing on your visitors....
